Note: Venus is closer to the Sun than the Earth:
Thus when Venus is between the Earth and the Sun or behind the Sun you will not see it, you only see it when it is one side of the sun or the other. Depending on which side of the Sun it is you look towards where the sun will rise or set, just before sunrise or just after sunset. If it is there you can not fail to see it it is VERY bright.
At the moment (7th March 2011) Venus is quite close to the Sun and can be seen near to horizon in the East, just before sunrise.

Other than the Sun and Moon, the brightest thing in the evening sky right now is the planet Venus, visible in the southwest sky at sunset. In fact, Venus is so bright, you can see it in the daytime if you know just where to look. Other than Venus, the brightest stars in the sky are Sirius, Vega and Rigel.
The planet Venus is normally referred to as the morning or evening star depending on where it is in its orbit around the sun. Venus is the brightest object in the sky after the sun and moon.
