John Henry was a fictional character in a series of stories, so he actually didn't die. In the 1800's there were magazine type of paperback stories that were written. John Henry was one of these stories. Others were about Western men pioneers and Indian hunters. Along with them Wild West shows were created to bring the stories to life. It is like a book today that is made into a movie.
