However, Akhenaten built a new capital at Akhetaten (modern-day Amarna) which was abandoned on his death.By 653 BC, the capital had moved to Sais.With the conquest of Egypt by Alexander the Great in 332 BC, the capital moved to the new city of Alexandria where it remained until the capital moved to Cairo in the present.
