The easiest way I have found to find name origins is this: go to Google.com and type in "name origin Bob" or whatever name you want, "name origin Johnson," etc. but without the quotation marks. For a last name, you can also type in "surname origin Johnson" or whatever the name is, without the quotation marks. Surname means last name. Another thing you can do is go to google.com and type in "Irish surnames origins" or whatever nationality the surname is from, without the quotation marks, and find them that way.

There are loads with numerous meanings and spellings. I would recommend www.babynamesofireland.com for this question. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I don't know if there is currently a website that gives reliable information about Irish names. A good book is Gaelic Personal Names by Ó Cróinín/Maguire. Probably better than anything online currently. For information on authenticIrish Gaelic names you might contact: www.daltai.com or www.irishgaelictranslator.com.
