There isn't an overdrive sensor. There are pressure switches, a temp sensor, solenoids, and speed sensors.

You can not prevent a sensor from failing.
On a 1996 Plymouth Breeze, the crankshaft sensor can be found above the oil filter. It should be accessible without having to remove any other parts.

Directly above/behind the top of the oil filter.
On the side of the engine above/behind the oil filter.

Have you checked for fuel and spark? Camshaft sensor and or crank sensor will cause that problem as well!
It is located on the back side of the intake manifold. Kind of hard to get to but reachable.
