Where is carbondale in Illinois?

Generally speaking, Carbondale is not a city on the scale of having suburbs. Its population is only in the 30k's and its immediate neighbors are similarly-sized towns intermixed with smaller villages. In fact, Marion, Illinois is considered by some to be the "big city" in the area more than Carbondale, due to its interstate access and businesses. Nevertheless, many small neighborhoods that make up Makanda, IL identify with Carbondale, as well as the town of Desoto, IL. Many rural neighborhoods stretch out across the area form the equivalent of "suburbs" to towns such as Carbondale, Murphysboro, and Marion but are largely unincorporated on their own.
