South Africa uses coal for power because it has no significant oil reserves, very little natural gas and a whole lot of coal, far more than its domestic consumption requires. Alternative clean power generation is at an experimental stage but there is a lot of potential for wind and solar power in the country. Hydro power is unlikely to develop, as South Africa is a dry country, but it has been involved in Hydro power projects in Mozambique, Angola and Congo (DRC) High grade coal is mainly exported, typically to iron and steel manufacturers. Low grade coal is used to fire power stations that generate most of the electricity used in South Africa. A small portion of coal production is converted to liquid fuels.
Coal is mined in Newcastle, New South Wales. The first coal was discovered back in 1791 by a group of convict escapees. For obvious reasons, they did not notify the authorities. British soldier, Lieutenant John Shortland, found a coal seam while looking for the escapees in 1797, and coal has been mined there ever since. Copper was also mined at Newcastle in the middle of the nineteenth century.
