Arizona has a number of very large copper producing mines. It is the largest copper producing region in the world. The copper is found in large granitic stocks called porphyry copper deposits. ( pronounced "poor-free") It's a type of granite. These are massive low grade deposits.

The major producing areas are near the towns of Kingman, Morenci, Bisbee, Bagdad and Miami-Globe. Most are operated by Freeport-McMoran Mining Company, one of the worlds largest mining companies.
