It depends on which way you go. If you take Hwy 101 it would be Santa Maria, if you take Hwy 5 there isn't much in the middle. Its mostly farms and Bakersfield and Fresno are further to the east but there are plenty of rest stops and smaller towns to stop in. 101 takes a little longer but its a very pretty drive.
