It is known that Mount Hekla had been dormant for at least 250 years when it erupted explosively for the first recorded time in 1104. This being the case, it has been around at least that long.
Fortunately no-one died in the 2000 Eruption of Hekla. Hekla is in a remote location and has rather tame eruptions so it doesn't pose significant danger.
