ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BIKE, BETWEEN THE SEAT AND THE MOTOR....
3 quarts engine oil tank;;;;;;;; 1 quart in primary
Harleys don't mix oil with their gas. Harleys have "dry sump" oil systems; instead of there being an oil pan in the engine, a Harley has an oil tank under the seat. The grade you want is 20W50.
The 883 Sportster takes just under 3 quarts of oil

it clearly states the information in your owners guide 3 quarts in the oil tank and put 4 oz in the filter before you put the filter on.
there is a petcock on the tank
On the right side of the motorcycle right under the seat is an oil tank. It will have a chrome plug with a dip stick attached. Read your owners manual, there is a wealth of information in it.
It's a hose from the tank to a dummy fitting on the frame....unclamp the hose and the oil runs out. When changing the engine oil, don't forget to also change the primary/transmission oil.
To change the oil on a 1999 Harley-Davidson 883 Sportster, start by warming up the engine to thin the oil for easier draining, then turn it off and let it cool slightly. Place a drain pan under the oil tank, remove the drain plug, and allow the old oil to fully drain out. Replace the drain plug, remove the old oil filter using an oil filter wrench, and install a new filter after applying a bit of oil to the rubber gasket. Finally, refill the oil tank with the recommended type and amount of oil, check the level with the dipstick, and ensure there are no leaks before starting the engine.
