The vehicle speed sensor which is an integral part of the speedometer
I believe it is a input speed sensor. Hyundai calls them pulse generators on the 99 elantra.
If the VSS is defective replace the instrument cluster. Only on 2001 and later Elantra's have speed sensor on transaxle
Go to hmaservice.com and register for free account (must use IE browser) and it will give you the factory service manual. Sensor is on top of transmission.
