John Hall Stephens (1847-1924) was never a member of the US Supreme Court.Stephens was a Democrat from Texas who served in the Texas State Senate from 1886-88, then was elected to the US House of Representatives for Texas' 13th District. After losing the 1916 House election, he retired to the Los Angeles, California, area where he died in 1924. He is interred at East View Cemetery in Vernon, Texas.You may be thinking of incumbent US Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens.
