1st thing to check is the spark. Remove a spark plug from the engine and plug it to the spark plug boot. Touch the plug to the cylinder head and crack the engine. Should see spark at the tip of the plug. If no spark, 2nd thing I would check is the crank position switch. It is located on the transaxle bell housing.
take spark plug cover off you see 4 plugs its next to the 1st plug on your left a wee black box camshaft sensor
I HAVE A 1991 560SEL MY NUMBERS ARE LOCATED ON THE DISTRIBITOR CAP ,ON THE DRIVER SIDE ,1ST PLUG IS 1-4 , PASSENGER SIDE 5-8Type your answer here...
if you look down at the front of the engine, one head will be about 1/2" farther forward than other head. the 1st spark plug on that side is always #1
The valve is located right on the engine block. it is a little hose that goes to the front part of the engine. its right below the 1st spark plug. you just pull the hose and the pcv valve is on it.
That would be the 1st spark plug up front in the passenger side head.
1. Get the right spark plugs fron your local autosho 2. Start at plug 1, which is the 1st plug in from the left of the engine. Gently work spark plug lead off the plug. 3. Set the gap at .54" ( the gap is the opening at the botom of the plug) 4. Insert new plug 5. Reconnect plug lead. If you want to replace the plug leads then do them 1 at a just time follow the lead back to the distributor cap and swap it out. Tools needed Socket set with spark plug socket and extention bars Pliers Spark plug gap tool (champered disc with numbers on it) Difficulty.. low.. number 6 can be tricky but can be done without major trauma Time.. 5 mins per plug
Just like you would do any other car, change and gap spark plugs and torque only to 10 ft. lbs. and only do the work on a cold engine, you don't want to strip the threads on the aluminum heads. Change the PCV valve, check the spark plug wires for cracks etc. and replace as needed. Look down the spark plug tube and if you see oil then the O rings are going bad in the valve covers. Look over the two coil packs and check for cracks etc. and replace as needed. This is for the 1st generation Marks, the second generation Marks (97-98) are a little different, they have coils on each of the spark plug wires. You didn't mention what Mark you have.
They are access thru the top of the edges of the intake manifold. There is a coil(8 of them, 1 for each spark plug) that goes on each spark plug. You will see them, round top with a wire harnesplug coming from each one. They have a bolt holding the coil down. Remove the wiring plug, remove the bolt and then wiggle the coil from attop the manifold. The spark plugs are down fairly deep, so you will need an extenion for your spark plug socket. It helps to have the tool on a "wiggler" that will not separate from the socket because its down there farther than you can reach if it comes off. The #4 plug and the numbers 7 and 8 can me hard to get. Get a fairly long piece of 5/16 or 3/8" ID fuel/oil line to put the plug in when trying to restart it. It could be you have coils misfiring as well, but check the spark plug condition 1st.
you take out the old plugs remember where the 1st 2nd 3rd 4th plug wire goes put in your other plugs put the plug wires back on and there ya go
Look for oil in the spark plug wells. If there is oil, you will need to replace the valve cover gasket Look for oil in the spark plug wells. If there is oil, you will need to replace the valve cover gasket
Its the 1st igntion coil. V8 have distrubutors which is kinda the same your spark plug wires hook up to them.
