If it's the 5.0 302 8 cylinder, then it's behind the intake manifold (which MUST be removed in order to get to the bottom bolt on the EGR valve) on the left side. If the EGR appears to be malfunctioning, it may be stuck open or closed. Spray it out with WD-40 and an air hose, and very carefully use a screwdriver or other small tool to move it back and forth.
If this fixes your problem it'll be tremendously cheaper on parts and labor.
The EGR Valve is located driver side near the intake manifold. The top appears round with one vaccum hose attached to the top. Below the round top to the right has a metal tube fitting with nut that branches off into the intake manifold.

That is a PCV valve, and it should be on the intake manifold. there would be either a rubber hose or a metal pipe leading from it to the air cleaner.
