Spokane, Washington's nickname is "The Lilac City." It was given this nickname because ever since the early 1900's, Spokane parks, businesses, and homes have historically had a large number of lilac flowers on display. Manito Park and Coeur d'Alene parks are good places to view these beautiful purple flowers during the summer months. Since 1938, the city has had an annual Spokane Lilac Festival.
The PGA Championship was not held in 1943 due to World War II. The 1944 PGA Championship was won by Bob Hamilton over Byron Nelson, 1 up, at the Manito Golf and Country Club in Spokane, Washington.

Spokane's most famous park could be one of two parks. The first possibility is Manito Park. Manito Park is a large park in Spokane's beautiful tree-shaded South Hill neighborhood. It has five gardens: Duncan Garden, Perennial Garden, Rose Hill, Nishinomiya Japanese Garden, and Lilac Garden. It also has other features such as the stone bridge, a duck pond, and the Gaiser Conservatory. It was designed by the Olmsted Brothers, the same landscape designers who designed Central Park in Manhattan. This is probably the most beautiful park in Spokane. The other possibility is Riverfront Park. This large park is situated in the downtown area and covers space on both the North and South banks of the Spokane river, as well as a sizeable island in the middle. The park features many paths, the historic Loof Carrousel, views of the Spokane Falls from several suspension bridges and a gondola, an outdoor ice skating arena, an IMAX theater, a clocktower, and the infamous "suction goat" trash receptacle. This park was the home of the 1974 World's Fair. Both Riverfront Park and Manito Park are famous, but Riverfront is probably Spokane's most famous park.
Manito's birth name is Antnio Rosas Seixas.
