To go further up the river, you need to unload the ship, and transfer to a smaller boat above the Fall Line. It is handy to have docks, places to store things and for people to live at such a point. Because of this, the location of the Fall line was also the site of some of the first towns and cities in Virginia.

A plateau is the foot hills of North Carolina where the Fall Line is. Boats can only travel up river to the Fall Line, past that are rapids or waterfalls. The area is called the Piedmont.
