Most wine in New York is produced in the Finger Lakes region and on Long Island.
Every state in the US (including Alaska and Hawaii) produces wine commercially. However, most are not major producers such as California, Washington, New York, and Oregon.

California consumes the most wine, but it is also the most populous state. A better measure might be consumption of wine per capita. However, I suspect that California would also be number one in that measure.
Most grocery stores in New York City do not carry wine, no. Unless it's cooking wine or cooking sherry. I'm sure there are some exceptions, but I have never seen wine in a New York City grocery store. They have beer usually, but not wine. And they definitely do not carry any hard liquor.Edited months later to add: the D'Agostino's supermarket near my house now sells wine, so, I guess it is possible to find wine in some New York City grocery stores.
