Remove the old filter. Apply oil to the gasket on the new one. Tighten it 3/4 turn after it makes contact with the mounting surface. I'm pretty sure it's a canister filter on the early VR6. It should look like a plastic oil filter with a bolt head on the bottom. You just open that and replace the element inside and the two o-ring gaskets (ones big and ones small).
