The Indiana State Soldiers and Sailors Monument is in the center of downtown Indianapolis, Indiana. It is in the National Register of Historic Places. The monument is dedicated to the veterans from Indiana who fought in the American Civil War, American Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War, and the Spanish-American War.
The monument recognizes the United States' first president, George Washington. The monument itself is much less important than the man for whom the monument was built to recognize.

Depends on how you define "long." The first commission to create such a monument was created by Congress in 1867, but the grandiose plan that followed was never funded. A bill to create a federal monument passed, after six attempts to do so, in 1910. The plan that came from this commission was adopted in 1913, but it too met with opposition. Work began in 1920, and the memorial was dedicated in 1922.
