If you can't find a thermostat, you should forget about changing it or whatever else you had in mind after you found it. They've been in virtually the same place since the 1930s or earlier.

The thermostat is inside the housing, it is on the motor where your upper rad hose connects to, hope this helps

I had the same problem with my 98 jimmy I repalaced the water pump have had heat since.
remove the 2 bolts that hold the thermostat housing to the intake manifold which the upper radiator hose attaches to the housing then just pull the thermostat out and replace.
check the thermostat see if there is one, if there is it may be stuck open.
