As I recall (it's been a very long time since I've read the book), Jeff was sent to the South as a spy, and had enlisted into the Confederate Army in carrying out this role. He sees Clardy at the Confederate camp. When the two encounter each other, Clardy recognises him, and Jeff has to escape with a band of Confederate soldiers and Bloodhounds trailing him.
