To get a wireless adapter to work with Windows XP (or any version of Windows), you need to install a device driver. This is usually provided by the manufacturer on a CD. If you have lost the CD, you can usually also download one from the manufacturer's website.
START then click control panel
Open network connections from control panel. Right click on your wireless connection. Click properties. Click on wireless networks tab. Click properties. Click on Authentication Tab. Clear the box for "Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network." Click OK to exit. Status should now be "connected". This seems to be a common problem w/XP and wifi, especially is you're using WEP. You'll still have to enter your password for your wireless network to get connected.
Make sure that your wireless network is connected to Internet. Otherwise, Windows and your wireless connection software will have troubleshooting tips for you to follow.
There is no specific version of Windows for wireless devices, as all newer ones support them. Windows XP was the first version to have built-in support for wireless networking, but third-party software and drivers are available for Windows 2000, Me, and Windows 98.
Dell does not support running Windows XP on this model, and attempting to do so may void your warranty. Users have successfully installed Windows XP on this model, but have reported difficulty finding drivers for some devices.

with windows xp home/pro/sp2, you can use the remote desktop connection, the server is already implemented in windows xp, the client can be downloaded free from microsoft. ( The client works well on old computers running windows 95 ^_^) The only trouble is that windows xp home/pro/sp2 only allow 1 working user at a time unless you use another software ( I use the xp unlimited terminal server) to unlock to 16 the number of active users. Hope it helps ^_^
