the backup light switch is part of the neutral start switch. it is located behind the shift lever at the bottom front of the transmission. it has about 8 wires coming out of the plug.
It should be in the top of the tranny, follow the wires up to the area under the shifter boot, you should see a little switch screwed into the shifter cover

I have a 94 mustang and the switch is in the trunk, left side by the brake light. You can see it as soon as you open the trunk and look on the left side behind the brake lights. Maybe yours is located there too. Good luck..
The brake light switch is located on a bracket behind the brake pedal support.
remove backup/radio fuse under hood

The 1990 Ford Mustang 2.3L SOHC had 88HP
The brake light is controlled by a relay switch. If the relay switch is bad the brake lights will stay on. The brake light switch simply plugs in and out. Unplug the brake light switch until you can replace it.
