On Eaton and Rockwell (now ZF Meritor) manuals and Eaton autoshift, it's on the LH side of the transmission, at the top, where the shift linkage would make contact with it when in the reverse position. For the manuals, you undo the screws on the boot attached to the shift column, lift up the boot, and you'll see it down there... there's a weatherpack plug connected to it. Disconnect the weatherpack plug... with the key in the on position, one of those poles should always be hot. At this point, you'll want to put a jumper between the two poles of that weatherpack switch... if the reverse lamps light up at this point, you have to replace the switch... it comes out with either a 7/8" or 15/16" wrench... it's been a while since I've done one, so I don't remember which offhand. If they don't light up, you've got a wiring fault.

Brake lights? Check brake light switch for adjustment or replacement
Not sure if this helps or not but on a 2005 Toyota Sienna LE, the dash-light dimmer switch is actually the trip odometer reset switch. Turning the trip odometer reset switch left or right controls the dash-light levels. Had it not been for the factory manual, and Google, I would have never known this.
