away from shelter
Rain gauges should be placed on level ground in an open area where there are no buildings, trees, or other obstacles to block the rain. This is to prevent the water collected on the roofs of buildings or the leaves of trees from dripping into the rain gauge after a rain, resulting in inaccurate readings.
This is common sense..... because it cant get all the rain
Yes, a rain gauge measures the amount of rain to fall above the gauge.
Yes a rain gauge measures rain fall
You can improvise a rain gauge using a soda bottle. Cut the soda bottle in half. Run a line of masking tape along the height of the bottles base. Using a marker and a ruler, mark each inch or milliliter along the tape. Place the top of the bottle upside down into the base, forming a funnel. Staple in place to secure. Place the rain gauge in an open spot in your yard to catch the rain.
Inside. You should always place your rain gauge outdoor in a nice open space where there is nothing to hinder the rain falling directly into the gauge. Mount the gauge vertically and level, and check and empty it after every rain fall.

a rain gauge works by first making sure it rained, and seeing how many inches the rain filled up the rain gauge.
Place the rain gauge in an open area (far from trees or buildings or anything that could interfere with rain falling on it. At regular intervals read the gauge record the amount with the date and time and empty the rain gauge.
Yes, a rain gauge measures the amount of rain to fall above the gauge.
You can place it on the roof, but not on the sides. Blowing wind can create a "rain shadow" on one side, with drops blocked as they fall. Alternately, projections from the building could funnel rain from a large wall area into the gauge.

Improper readings could result because of rain being diverged from the gauge by the trees leaves, or dripping water could also affect them.
