The reasoning behind this is that the fans are usually in warehouses that have high ceiling that are hard to get to switch from summer to winter. To switch from summer to winter in your type of fan, the wiring has to be changed inside the motor box. Fans for use in homes will all have the reverse switch.

If it doesn't have a reverse rotation switch then it isn't designed to go backwards. Those types of ceiling fans are a little more decrative and weren't intended for that purpose.

Depending on what type of fan, the fan control switch can be located on the wall for a ceiling fan. Each type of fan will have a different location for the fan control switch.

There IS a switch on the exterior, but it is hard to find. It should be near to the top of the fan (not the pole it is hanging off of). It is this way on mine but yours could be of different design so you may want to check the inside of the fan if you can not find it (it sounds ridiculous but where else could it be?)

Nothing, IF it's made for a four blade fan. If it is a FIVE blade fan and you only have four blades, then it will be out of balance. It doesn't matter how many blades as long as they are spaced out equally and are balanced right.
