The cave is blocked by rocks at 831 AD. There are two steps to getting the vase:
1) Go to the Great Wall of China (1593 AD, 6 o'clock on the time device). Go right and follow the path of black dirt. There is a barrel of gunpowder. (While you are here, climb up the wall to the upper right to win the Thor Amulet in a memory game.
2) Go to the Viking Age (831 AD, 2 o'clock on your time device. There will be a Viking who is upset. Give him the amulet. Go up the rocks until you come to a pile of rocks - click on the wall and the gunpowder will blast it open. You have to go through the dark cave with just your torch, before it goes out. Run down, up, up ,up, across, down, and left, jumping the three puddles at the end. Once you have the vase, you can leave with the time device.
*Once you get the Glider Wings from Leonardo da vinci (1516 AD), you can return to this island and recover the Viking armor that is atop the tall rock on the far right. It has no role in the game, however.
