First settled in 1726 as part of a struggle between the Spanish and the Portuguese, this city of one of the most southernmost in the world, and it has a richly unique cultural and agricultural history. The tango originates here, as well as the candombe, which began in the 1800’s. Even a world cup was held here in 1930.
The city of Montevideo is home to the world’s largest Carnival, and the beautiful old Montevideo Metropolitan Cathedral, thought to date as far back as 1740. There is the Ciudad Vieja, the colonial city that can be walked through during the day. Also, the Semana Criolla is an exciting recreation of creole life with story telling, music and activities. There are also beaches and resorts to spend nights at.
Montevideo is a beautiful southern city rich with history and a vastly different culture to explore.
