The compressor is between the right hand wheel and headlight (right hand drive) in wheel arch
Don't think the 1989 Toyota Camry came with an airbag system.

The airbag module on an 04 Toyota Sienna is located at the front of the engine compartment. It monitors for impacts which cross a threshold which triggers the airbags.
It sounds like your compressor was killed. What more than likely happend is that your airbag got a hole or crack in it causing the compressor to work overtime. I would recommend a conversion kit. Its under the center console below the radio and little cubby bolted to the floor....
so they know that the airbag is off.
