If it is a semi-auto and made after 1957 it will be on the frame. I.E., Model 39 or Model 645-2. If by pistol you mean a revolver, you will have to open the cylinder and look in the recess where the crane/yoke rests.
No model numbers used before @ 1957. After that, look inside the crane/yoke area.
Realistically, you can't. If you give the sn, the best you will get is range of models. If it has a model number, it will be stamped on the revolver inside the frame by the yoke/crane assembly.
Made in 1950. You can get a factory letter for 50 USD
Model 686 (plus/seven shot). Covers several barrel lengths. Should be visible on the inside of the yoke.
They are assembly numbers.
1970 to 1972
You must provide the sn or call S&W with it. The Smith and Wesson model 19 3rd change(19-3) was made by Smith and Wesson from 1967-1976.The serial number should be found if you swing the cylinder out and look at the yoke just below the barrel.
S&W Frame and Yoke Numbers LocationHello, You are asking a question that has a wide spectrum of answers. Depending on the year, model and type. You may find your answer at Jim Supica's site thearmchairgunshow. He has written books on these fine firearms.
All of them have the serial number on the butt. Some of them have the same serial number on the bottom of the barrel above the extractor. Some have it on the back of the cylinder and the extractor star. Some also have it on the back of the yoke or crane visible through an empty chamber. There is also usually an assembly number on the frame below the barrel inside the crane area with a matching number on the matching surface of the crane. sometimes the grips are also serial numbered the same as the revolver. <><><> Of course, you will also find Smith & Wesson, their logo, and the words "Marcas Registradas". S&W had problems with spanish makers copying their weapons.
Gas ring changed from yoke to cylinder, 6" bbl introduced, Cylinder counter bore and pinned barrel eliminated, cylinder length changed to 1.62", New yoke retention system/radius stud package.
The value of a Smith & Wesson .357 cartridge or a Smith & Wesson revolver that fires the .357 ctg (cartridge)? You must first identify the model you have. Sometimes that is best done by looking for and matching what you have. A large group can be seen on places like AuctionArms.com and Gunsamerica.com. The model number is located on most modern S&W's in the yoke where it can be seen with the cylinder open. If all else fails just email me a picture to Merwinman@triad.rr.com. with S&W on the subject line.....Terry
