When the solar system was being formed, some rock and dust and stuff like that collected in the young sun's orbit, thus creating the planets. There were many planets at first, but many of them destroyed each other. A mars sized planet smashed into the young Earth, and the debris from the collision created the Moon. The Earth cooled, and scientists think that comets from water to Earth. And the rest is history =P
