you can buy the needed harness for this connection then all you do is plug it in --- The above answer is completely USELESS, i don't know who wasted their time writing it. I have the same truck and have been having problems with it, here is what I've learned from experimenting and talking to Ford service techs so far: The "factory connection" is located behind the license plate near the spare tire and attached to the bed body. It is an 8 Hole connector, gray in color, and a rounded rectangle in shape. Various Harnesses are sold that will plug into this however only one for 99-03(or 04) Super Duties will work. That being said, there are many adapters that can link from a RV type adapter, an electric trailer brake wiring adapter, or for just a 4 pin connecter. Another problem you may run into, is that some lights will be working and others will not, for example my right blinker and brake light work, however the left side does not and the running lights do not (for a 4 pin connector). This could be caused by a break in the wiring somewhere along the body of the truck (I checked mine this was not the case). This sent me to the local Ford dealer, where I found out that there is an electronic "module" that is devoted to trailer lighting and electronics that has malfunctioned on several Super Duties. It varies in price from about 250-500 and should be installed by a Ford Technician. BIG BUCKS thanks again Ford Jerks! On a more positive note, that I will be taking, You always have the option of splicing the actual tail lights of the truck and running a 4 pin connector from that (will not work for electric brakes, RVs, etc.). Research more information and buy a repair manual with a Wiring diagram before you do this! HOPE THAT HELPS BETTER THAN SOMEONES "NOT ANSWER"
There is a connection issue between the trailer brake controller and the trailer.
If the 2004 GMC Envoy came with a tow package, then there should be a trailer brake controller harness. It would be located up under the dash near the brake pedal.
If there is a trailer wiring harness on the vehicle for towing unplug harness under drivers side rear tail light to eliminate the trailer wiring that's probably the issue then plug factory wires together
It is located under the dash below ashtray. It will be 4 pin plug w/RED,Blue,White,Green wires.
The trailer brake wiring connection is part of a complete trailer lighting and breaking system. The harness plugs into an adaptor near the spare tire behind the license plate. For More information READ THIS: Where%20is%20the%20factory%20connection%20for%20a%20trailer%20brake%20harness%20on%20a%202001%20ford%20F250%20SDNot exactly the answer to the question...The brake controller harness plugs into a grey colored connector located under the large removable plastic cover just below your steering column. It is to the right side of the column.
It isn't there, Dodge didn't wire the Dakota with one. You will have to wire the brake controller your self.
You need to purchase the add on harness from the dealer. This harness plugs into one of the junction blocks located under the driver's side of dash above your left foot area. The other end of the harness attaches to your trailer brake controler. The trailer brake "blue" wire in back is folded back and tucked in the rear harness on the left side of the rear frame rail. You may have to drop the spare tire to expose it and connect it to the trailer connector plug.
There are about 5 fuses for the trailer harness, Trailer Back up,Trailer left turn, Trailer right turn, Trailer Brake, and Trailer hazards. They are located in the underhood fuse box on the Drivers side of your motor. On my 2003 Silverado, the Trailer left/stop and Trailer right/stop fuses are located in the fuse panel just inside the driver's side door. (Not sure about the trailer brake or hazard fuses.....I wasn't having problems with those :). There is one additional fuse for the trailer harness. The 15A fuse for the trailer running lights is located in the fuse panel under the hood, next to the battery. The fuse is labeled "Trailer Park".
Start with: Check fuses, brake light switch (at brake pedal), check for trailer harness problems, check bulbs.
Brake pedal switch, wiring, bulbs, bad trailer harness (if there), fuses...
Sounds like a weak ground connection somewhere on the trailer or tow vehicle.
Not all 1500's where built with it. If it is there it will be above the parking brake.
