The FIPL is located on the left side of the injection pump. It is one of the sensors that the idi uses to calculate shift points. The others are the rpm sensor, rear speed sensor located in the rear diff, the FIPL and trans selector range switch. And thats it. The Fipl is adjustable and needs to be correctly set. If it isn't the vehicle will probably shift weird, irratic, hard, etc. So mark the old ones location and install the new one in the same position. If not the dealer will need to set it for you using the NGS. You can always trial and error it and you can get close enough to spec. Good luck.
