True, but that's if you include Alaska and Hawaii. Most people who ask this question are looking for the geographic center of the "lower 48." Before Alaska and Hawaii became states the Coastal and Geographic Society picked a spot near Lebanon, Kansas as the center of the US. (They cut out a scale cardboard map of the country and the point at which it balanced on a pin, was where they picked.)

They even put up a pyramid shaped rock monument to mark the spot. The locals built a hotel expecting masses of tourists to flock to the spot...it didn't happen. The hotel closed within a couple years. The monument still stands in the middle of a small park.

For the entire 50 states, it is in western South Dakota. near the county seat of Belle Fourche, SD.

Considering only the 48 contiguous states, the center is in north central Kansas near the town of Lebanon.

The US Geodetic Survey admits that a precise means of locating the exact spot may not exist. It does however accept a location 17 miles West of Castle Rock, South Dakota as the 50 State geographical center.
