Before Alaska and Hawaii became states the Coastal and Geographic Society picked a spot near Lebanon, Kansas as the center of the US. (They cut out a scale cardboard map of the country and the point at which it balanced on a pin, was where they picked.)
They even put up a pyramid shaped rock monument to mark the spot. The locals built a hotel expecting masses of tourists to flock to the spot...it didn't happen. The hotel closed within a couple years. The monument still stands in the middle of a small park.
