The name of the main character in the TV show Have Gun Will Travel was Paladin (no first name). The character was played by the actor Richard Boone.
His first name was Wire. A play on words by notoriously playful screenwriter Robert Conrad. Paladin always showed a business card that said "Wire Paladin" at his hotel in SanFrancisco......a cute ploy by Conrad, picked up by few. For more such puns, watch the re-runs,,,,,have fun!
The part of Paladin (the knight-without-armor hired gun) in the 1950's, Old West television series was played by the late Richard Boone. The part of Paladin in the Radio Series was played by John Dehner.

If this is in relation to Feb 08 Guns Magazine. Paladin is your man. The chess piece on his holster was the uniqueness.I don't remember if it was Have gun will travel with Paladin but there were two cowboy shows when I was growing up with unique holsters one swiveled and allowed him to shoot without drawing the pistol and the other one had a special holster for a larger gun almost like a cutoff rifle or shotgun and I think the TV show was called Wanted dead or Alive.Steve McQueen stared in "Wanted Dead or Alive" and wore a cut off lever action rifle. You may be thinking of a movie with Dan Duryea. He wore a cowboy set-up right hand revolver. The unique feature was that the gun was mounted down his right leg so that he didn't have to raise his hand and draw from his waist. He was derided as wearing a 'Knee Gun' in the movie.Clam shell holsters have appeared in several TV cowboy series but not worn by the main character.
Richard Boone. His name on the show was Paladin and if memory serves me correct, he was a gunfighter. And the title suggests: If you hire me, I have a gun and I am willing to travel.
The horse's screen name was Rafter. They were really called Curley, Frisco, Mexico, Rudy and Rafter. Richard Boone came up with the name Rafter for Paladin's horse.
Have Gun Will Travel is an American Western television series that aired on CBS from 1957 through 1963. It was one of the few TV programmes to have it's own radio show.It followed the adventures of Paladin played by Richard Boone on TV and John Dehner in the radio broadcast. The radio show ran from 1958 to 1960.
l remember Paladin's first name being ravealed in one episode because l recall thinking at the time...."humm....l thought his 1st name was' Wire'" LOL. l have researched this online & can find no reference anywhere. paladin's real name was Cay Alexander befor smocky, a gun fighter gave him his nickname, noble paladin, a medeval knight and that's were the cheese knight comes into play.
