The boy that gives you the Flute in Link to the Past is in the Magic Grove area in dark world. If you go in the light world, he disappears. Go to the dark world, go to the magic grove area, talk to the tree looking guy and he'll tell you about how he used to play his flute (ocarina) for the birds and how he wishes to do so again. Use the mirror and warp back to the light world, go to the top of the magic grove and dig in the flowers until you find the flute. Go back to the dark world, play it for the tree guy and he'll turn into a... a tree i guess. Then you can play it for his dad in the bar at Kakariko Village and he'll give you a piece of a heart. Play it on the south pad near the windvane near the center of the village and it will allow you to ride the bird to any area you have been to already.
