The insert menu is for inserting various things like shapes, tables, pictures, charts, headers, footers text boxes etc into a document.

Click on the insert menu and have a look. Try to insert a table it is not hard to do.

The insert key on the keyboard is just above the delete key. In Word 2010, when you have a document open, there is an Insert tab that will display a ribbon of options so you can insert a screenshot, files, a header or footer and other items.
