US banknotes don't have mint marks because they're not made by the US Mint. The Mint only makes coins; bills are produced by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.

Up till 1991, all bills were printed in Washington DC. That year the BEP opened a second printing plant in Fort Worth. They can be distinguished from Washington bills by the presence of a tiny "FW" next to one of the plate indicators, usually on the top of the front. The plate indicator is a letter followed by a number, like C3 or B15; a bill printed in Fort Worth would read FWC3 or FWB15 (for example)

Who prints Federal Reserve notes?

Federal Reserve Notes are printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing at facilities in Washington and Fort Worth. They're then distributed through the Federal Reserve banks located in 12 different cities around the country. Each bank is responsible for requesting currency and transferring it to the private banking system. Contrary to popular misunderstandings, the US Mint doesn't have anything to do with paper money. The Mint only issues coins.

Does the US mint print two dollar bills with individual state designations?

No, because the Mint doesn't print any bills. They only make coins. Bills are printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing which is completely separate from the Mint. Anyway, current $2 bills are Federal Reserve Notes like all other modern US currency. That means they're printed with seals indicating which of the 12 Federal Reserve districts requested them, the same as all other denominations. Federal Reserve Notes aren't printed for each state.

Who is in charge of the production of coins and banknotes?

They are normally controlled by the treasury of the issuing country. In the UK, the Treasury controls the Bank of England which orders notes from the Royal Mint (coins) and De La Rue (notes). In the USA, the treasury controls the Federal Reserve, who instruct the Federal Bureau of Engraving and Printing to produce the notes and the United States Mint the coins.

What is the value of a 1953 US 5 dollar bill from the Atlanta mint?

To clear things up:Bills are printed. The US Mint only makes coins. There isn't a mint in Atlanta. Atlanta is the location of one of the 12 regional Federal Reserve Banks that distribute Federal Reserve Notes. However if your bill has a seal with the letter "F" in a circle with the words "Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta Georgia", its date can't be 1953 because no $5 Federal Reserve Notes carry that date. Please check the date on your bill again and look at the question "What is the value of a (date) US 5 dollar bill?" for more information.

What is the Value of an 1860 Federal Reserve 1 dollar bill in mint condition?

What US agency prints Federal Reserve notes?

All Federal Reserve notes are printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.Explanations and myth-bustingEven though bills have different Federal Reserve District indicators on them, they're not actually printed in each district. All bills are printed at BEP plants in Washington and Fort Worth; when a district bank requests more bills the BEP prints whatever denominations are needed and marks them with the district letter (or name, for $1 and $2 bills). The US Mint is NOT involved in printing bills. The Mint's only responsibilities are striking of coins and medals. It's a separate agency from the BEP.
