On Roosevelt dimes minted from 1946 to 1964, the mint mark position is on the back, at the bottom-left of the torch

Dimes from 1965 to 1967 do not have mint marks.

Starting in 1968 the mint mark position was moved to the front, above the date.

Possible letters are:

Blank = Philadelphia, 1946-79

P = Philadelphia, 1980-present

D = Denver

S = San Francisco 1946-55; proof coins only 1968-present

I have a 1940 roosevelt dime and know it is fake or mistyped. Is there any value to this dime?

If you have a 1940 Roosevelt dime it is fake. The Roosevelt dime was not produced by the US Mint until 1946.

Is there any mark under the neck of a US Roosevelt dime?

yes

Is the 1968 Roosevelt dime without the s mark rare?

No. The US Mint produced over nine hundred million 1968 Roosevelt Dimes without an "S" mint mark. Unless it is truly a Proof dime from San Fransisco. It would be more than likely in a proof, unopened set. Apparently, they produced the proof coin (which started in 1968 in San Fran) missing the mint stamp. They caught it but some got out I guess. I think that is where the confusion stems from. This coin didn't have a mint mark from one of the other mints.

What is the value of a 1964 US dime with an S mint mark?

There can't be a 1964-S Roosevelt dime because all coinage at the San Francisco Mint was suspended from 1956 to 1964 inclusive, and they didn't resume use of the S mint mark until 1968. You may be looking at the initials "JS" on the front of the coin - those are the monogram of John Sinnock, who designed the dime. Remember that up till 1964 Roosevelt dimes had their mint marks on the back side of the coin, at the bottom of the torch, and further that Philadelphia coins didn't have mint marks back then. What is the value of a 1959 US dime?

The value of the more common dates among Roosevelt dimes is based on their silver content rather than their mint mark(*) Regardless of mint mark, a 1959 dime is worth about 0.072 times the current price of silver which can be found in the business section of a newspaper or at a site such as kitco.com/ (*) See the related question for info about mint marks

What is the value of a 1965-P Roosevelt dime?

Your coin is worth face value only; hundreds of millions were minted. Note that the coin is simply a 1965 dime, not 1965-P. The P mint mark wasn't used on US dimes until 1980, and no US coins of any denomination had mint marks from 1965 to 1967.

Where is the mint mark on an 1853 US dime?

If there is a mint mark it will be a small "O" (New Orleans) below the word DIME and above the wreath on the back of the coin. If there's no mint mark the coin was struck in Philadelphia; dimes didn't carry a "P" mint mark until 1980. Please see the Related Question for more information.

What US currency bill is Franklin Delano Roosevelt on?

Roosevelt has been on the dime since the year after his death, 1946. The US Mint is doing a "Presidential Dollar" series now, with four new dollar coins released each year, taking the presidents in order, so, Roosevelt will be on one of those in a few years. He is not on any paper money.
