Mint Marks On CoinsThe mint mark for US coins minted since 1968 is on the heads side of the coin usually at the base of the neck or under the date.

Previous years had the mint mark on the reverse, or tails, side of the coin in some convenient clear area of the design. Often these mint marks are hard to see, especially on a well-worn coin.

Before 1980, except on the Susan B. Anthony dollar and "war nickels" dated 1942-45, Philadelphia coins had no mint mark. So if you have an older coin without a mint mark, that's OK. It's not an error, it's just from Philly.

More details...Mint marks appear in different places depending on which coin you have, sometimes they're even in different places on the same type of coin depending on what date the coin was minted!

The only general rules for U.S. coins are

> Up to 1964, most coins had mint marks on the reverse (back) side. They were normally located under the wreath or eagle on higher denomination coins, and near the side or bottom of some others. Of course, there were exceptions such as Standing Liberty quarters, Walking Liberty halves from 1916 and 1917, and Lincoln cents.

> Starting in 1968 all coins except Presidential Dollars have mint marks on the obverse (front) side. Again, there's no specific rule for their location. Presidential dollars have the mint mark incused (recessed) on their edges.

> Coins minted before 1980, except wartime nickels and 1979 dollars, have no mint mark if they were made in Philadelphia. Higher-denomination coins minted after that have a P. Pennies made in Philadelphia and West Point do not have a mint mark, even today.

Other mint marks are

D = Denver, 1906 to today

S = San Francisco, up to 1955 and occasionally after that, plus on all proof coins from 1968 to today

W = West Point, on modern commemorative coins

O = New Orleans, up to 1909

CC = Carson City, up to 1893

D = Dahlonega GA, 1838-1861 (not at the same time as Denver)

C = Charlotte, also 1838-1861

It depends on which coin. On the penny, it's on the front just below the date. On nickels, it's also on the front below the date. For dimes, it's on the front right above the date. Then on quarters, it's on the front, to the right of George Washington. If you happen to have a half dollar, the mark is below Kennedy's neck. Finally on presidential dollars, it's on the rim of the coin next to the date. Note: these locations apply to currently minted coins only.

It also depends on the year the coin was struck. Starting in 1968 the mintmark was moved to the obverse of nickels, dimes, quarters and half dollars and all dollar coins until the 2007 Presidential dollars were released that have the mintmarks/dates/motto on the edge of the coins. Sacagawea dollars had obverse mintmarks until 2009 when they were moved to the edge. Lincoln cents have had obverse mintmarks since 1909. For most coins dated 1964 or before, the mintmarks are on the reverse. No U.S. coin dated 1965, 1966 or 1967 will have a mintmark.

Normally you have to know a coin's denomination to locate the mint mark because it can be in different places. Also, Philadelphia did not use a mint mark on most coins until 1980 so it's very possible your coin doesn't have a mint mark. Once you know the denomination you can check a site such as www.coinfacts.com that shows the mint mark locations for all US coins.
