The "front" of an engine is the opposite of where the transmission attaches.

In a front-wheel drive vehicle, the engine is turned sideways, so the 'front' is the end facing the passenger side fender.

It's also where the serpentine belt and pulleys are found

Bonus names info: the 'side' of the engine by the windshield/firewall is known as Bank 1, and the other at the front of the car is Bank 2.
