If you are talking about something that has read-only access, it could even be an optical drive of some sort located on a computer or a "jukebox" of multiple optical discs hung off the network in some location.
As for the physical location of a network drive, it can be anywhere that is accessible from the network in question. Just because you can use it does not mean that it is sitting in the same room as you. It could be elsewhere on the same floor, in a different building, or even across the city/state/country from you with your only clue to its distance from you possibly being the amount of time it takes to get it to respond to your requests.
