On any GM block, the number one piston will always the first front one on the driver side closest to the head light. Hope this helps.

It will fit, but you might want to have the crank, rods, and pistons balanced first as there is a big difference in the weight of a 350 piston versus a 305 piston. Wouldn't want to get it all together and have a nasty vibration at certain speeds.

The #1 cylinder on a small-block Chevy is the furthest forward, on the driver's side, followed by 3, 5, 7. The #2 cylinder is the first on the passenger side, followed by 4, 6, 8. Other manufacturers can have a different system of numbering the cylinders on their engines.
