It is on the front of the motor underneath the plastic air intake. You have the option of removing the filter from the top or bottom of the car. From the top I would remove the plastic tubing first. From below I would just be ready for the cascade of oil that will pour out of the filter. I place paper towels and wrap most of the things in a plastic bag before taking the filter off of this car. Poor placement and angle of the filter; engineers..go figure. I have a 2007 Aura XR with 73K miles and still find the filter removal to be a fluid-filled experience...

The oil filter on a 2008 Saturn Astra is located in front of the engine. The oil filter can be found on the underside of the exhaust manifold towards the passenger side of the vehicle.
