Pharyngeal Tonsil
Back of throat
Tonsillectomy is the medical term meaning surgical removal of a pharyngeal tonsil.
There are pharyngeal tonsils...
The unpaired tonsil located in the nasopharynx is the pharyngeal tonsil, also known as the adenoid. It is an important component of the immune system, helping to trap and respond to pathogens entering the body through the nasal cavity. The pharyngeal tonsil can become enlarged, particularly in children, leading to breathing difficulties or ear infections.
Interestingly enough, there is no synonym for the word 'tonsil'. Many nouns do not have a synonym, especially proper nouns.
Humans also possess lingual tonsils at the base of the tongue and pharyngeal tonsils, commonly known as adenoids, located in the back of the throat. These tonsils, along with the palatine tonsils, are part of the lymphatic system and help protect the body against infections.
The unpaired tonsil located in the nasopharynx is known as the adenoid or pharyngeal tonsil. It is a mass of lymphoid tissue situated at the roof of the nasopharynx, playing a role in the immune response by helping to trap pathogens entering through the nasal cavity. The adenoid can become enlarged, particularly in children, leading to issues such as nasal obstruction or ear infections.
adenoidResembling a gland; when used in the plural, adenoids, they refer to lymphoid tissue that normally exists in the nasopharynx of children and is known in medicine as the pharyngeal tonsil.
The term for the collection of lymphoid tissue in the oropharynx is "Waldeyer's Ring." It includes the palatine tonsils, lingual tonsil, pharyngeal tonsil (adenoids), and tubal tonsils. These structures play a role in immune response against pathogens entering the body through the mouth and nose.
1. There is only one pharyngeal tonsil, even though it's often referred to in the plural sense, and when it becomes infected (or hypertrophy) it is then called an adenoid. So only one adenoid.
