Pharyngeal tonsils are located in the pharynx ( the throat.)
1. There is only one pharyngeal tonsil, even though it's often referred to in the plural sense, and when it becomes infected (or hypertrophy) it is then called an adenoid. So only one adenoid.
One set of tonsils, which conists of two tonsils (one on either side of the throat). Most people have five tonsils. These include a single pharyngeal tonsil, often referred to as the adenoid, located in the posterior wall of the upper part of the throat. A pair of palatine tonsils is found at the back of the mouth; a pair of lingual tonsils is located at the base of the tongue.
The tonsils form a broken ring under the mucous membranes in the mouth and back of the throat and they are called the pharyngeal lymphoid ring. This ring includes the palatine tonsils, located on each side of throat, the pharyngeal tonsils, located near posterior opening of nasal cavity and the lingual tonsils, located near base of the tongue. They protect against bacteria that may invade tissues around the openings between the nasal and oral cavities.
