It originally used Type A but the modern equivalent is Dexron III A/T fluid.
I believe that any kind of power steering fluid will work. You can actually use any type of hydraulic fluid (i.e. brake, power steering, or transmission). It is usually best to use only power steering fluid if you can get it.
The Power steering pump is located underneath where you put the power steering fluid.

The manual states GM power steering fluid DOT 3
the power steering fluid is located on the passenger side right in front of the wiper fluid resevoiur
It is near the passenger compartment on the passenger side of the car. I have a 2001 and looked this up in the manual.
