There are 2 possibilities for this depending on what engine is in the car. If you have a 3.8 liter engine, the reservoir is hidden beneath the alternator on the backside of the engine. You can get to the cap and check the fluid level, but they don't make it too easy. Be careful not to drop the cap, because it can be difficult to retrieve. If it isn't the 3.8 liter engine, then the power steering reservoir is right at the top of the engine on the left side (when looking at the engine from the front of the car).
On a 1998 Mercury Mountaineer : Both the 4.0 liter V6 engine and the 5.0 liter V8 engine have the power steering fluid reservoir located at the front of the engine near the vehicle battery * according to the Owner Guide , MERCON automatic transmission fluid is used as the power steering fluid

On a 1996 Ford Escort : The power steering fluid goes in the power steering fluid reservoir , at the front of the engine compartment , on the passenger side of the vehicle ( looking from the front of the vehicle it is the reservoir on the RIGHT) * With the 1.9 liter engine the reservoir on the left is the engine coolant reservoir and with the 1.8 liter engine the reservoir on the left is the windshield washer fluid reservoir , but with both engines the power steering fluid reservoir is the container to the RIGHT , looking from the FRONT of the vehicle
You can replace your 1998 Buick 3.8 liter engine with a Buick 3.1 liter engine. You will need to change the motor mounts and some of the wiring harness will need to be modified.

its a 350hp vortec engine.
I assume the power steering pump for the 4.0 liter V6 engine is the same as my 1995 Ford Explorer : On the drivers side of the engine , near the front , it's one of the belt driven accessories ( it has a removable cap that allows you to add power steering fluid if needed , to the power steering fluid reservoir which is kind of a pale yellow colored " plastic " reservoir )
On a 1997 Mercury Sable : For the 3.0 liter VULCAN , V6 engine : The power steering fluid reservoir is near the front of the engine compartment , just to the left of the engine oil dipstick ( when looking into the engine compartment from the front of the vehicle ) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Also , the 3.0 DURATEC has the reservoir near the passenger side strut tower in the engine compartment
