Mona is A for the first four books. But in the second four books, there is a NEW A, which ends up being Ali's secret twin Courtney. Technically, the new A IS Ali, but the girl they were friend with was Courtney, and she was passing off as Ali. So the REAL Ali, whose legal name is actually 'Alison', is the new A. For the show they are only following the first four books... so A is still Mona.
